The nationwide lockdown instated in France on March 17, 2020 to curb the rapid spread of Covid-19 has caused a restriction of people’s freedom that is unprecedented in peacetime, especially on their freedom to move and travel. At the Mobile Lives Forum, we wanted to assess the present and future social impacts on the lifestyles of French people. We found large disparities in individual practices, especially depending on age, but also that people have discovered novel lifestyles, some of which have bred a newfound desire to move and travel less after the end of the lockdown.

In 2018 German metal industry workers won the right to reduce their working week from 35 to 28 hours. As with similar schemes elsewhere, sustainability commentators have highlighted the potential of working time reduction not just to achieve a better work-life balance but also to reduce energy consumption by reducing overall material consumption. This research project examines the desirability and sustainability of this scheme, paying particular attention to the conditions under which reduced working hours can produce social and environmental benefits. What are the participants’ aspirations? What are the impacts on their mobility and lifestyle? Is the reduction of direct and indirect energy consumption as significant as expected?

What if the population of Ile-de- France - the wealthiest, densest and most populated region of France - started to decline in the coming years? This possibility is shown to be more likely than ever in the latest study from the Forum on aspirations and the residential mobility projects of lle-de-France residents. Over the last decade, high birth rates in Ile-de- France have been increasingly unable to compensate for migration out of the region. Nearly one resident out of two states they would like to leave Ile-de- France to live in another region. What explains this phenomenon?

What would the lifestyles and mobility of tomorrow look like in France if they were to be realized according to people’s utopian dreams? What changes would have to be made in terms of collective rhythms, transportation services, territorial organization and employment to make them possible? It's hard to embrace the lifestyle of one’s dreams, and yet some people manage to. But how, and at what price? What does their experience teach us about the obstacles to overcome so that others may follow in their footsteps? The goal of the survey was to sketch out desirable futures by speaking with French citizens.

Data sharing is a key to consolidating scientific methods and knowledge, and notably feeds discussion across opposing viewpoints. However, it is a nascent practice in qualitative research. A team from the Centre for Cities, Territories, Environment and Societies (CITERES) are paving the way with a project to reopen six qualitative studies conducted in peri-urban and rural areas. The project has three objectives: establish a methodological framework to mutualize qualitative data, define the requirements to share data, and provide a renewed analysis. The challenge: gain a better understanding of mobility in sparsely populated areas and identify pathways to ending car dependence.

The issue of cars in the city is currently on the political, media and scientific agenda. Almost universally, mobility regulation policies tend to call into question the dominant position of the individual car in the functioning of urban life. But can we go further and imagine lifestyles that go completely beyond the individual car in a territory like the Paris’ region? This hypothesis was explored by researchers at the Geography-Cities Laboratory (CNRS) for 2 years as part of the “Post-Car Île-de-France” project.

Car use has declined in most OCDE countries since the early 2000s; for the first time since the end of World War II, there has been a drop in the proportion of young people who choose to get their driver’s license. The goal of the EVOLMOB study was to get a better understanding of what this trend means for the future. To do this, it specifically focused on young people’s travel behaviors in three regional cities: Lyon, Grenoble (France) and Montreal (Canada). What relationship do young people have with the car in these urban regions today? What are the drivers of the changes observed in these different economic, geographic and social contexts? The research results are now in.

Digital nomads are itinerant worker-travelers who simultaneously combine work, travel, consumption, and leisure. Their lifestyles is enabled by information and communication technologies that break the need to co-locate work and “home” and enable location independence. Digital nomads use so-called “lifestyle arbitrage” strategies to exploit the difference between the compensation that they receive and their costs of living. There is strong reason to believe that the community of digital nomads has been severely disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic and this project seeks to assess the impacts of the coronavirus on the ability of these individuals to reproduce their lifestyles.
